Home Style || Getting Your Garden Ready For Some Spring Sunshine!

Home Style - Collaborative Post

With all the rain, snow and dark, dark nights, it’s hard to believe that spring is just around the corner. But it is.

And when Spring does finally appear, we’re going to need our garden space to enjoy it. With the reality of holidays still a long way off, the garden is so essential to us right now.

A lot of us have already focused heavily on getting DIY projects finished inside our homes. So, perhaps this year it’s time for a spot of DIY outside. If you’re looking at a sodden brown mess outside your window and thinking yes, it’s probably time, then here’s some ideas to get your garden ready for some spring sunshine.

Have a general tidy

Removing dead foliage, overgrown branches and moss from your garden is the first task. Don’t worry if everything looks a bit bare now, it will soon liven up with the first shoots of spring.

Remove debris and algae from patios, decking and paved areas, by giving them a good sweep and clean. You can use a patio or decking cleaner for this, but these usually contain chemicals. A pressure washer is a safe alternative, that’s kinder to pets and wildlife.

Make it sociable

There are multiple ways of making your garden a more sociable space, even when it’s just your household that’s using it! For daytime entertainment, you could add garden games and comfy outdoor seating. And for warmer evenings a BBQ or fire pit.

Start planning what you want and where to put it. Then, by the time the warmer weather comes, you’re all set!

Add some storage

Storage is one of the most practical things to add to your garden. Not only for things like bikes and tools that you really don’t want inside your house, but to store garden furniture in over winter.

We want to use our gardens as an extra room of the house, but this is all dependent on the weather playing ball. For those days when it’s raining your garden storage is a blessing. All of those outdoor cushions, seats and other accessories can be stowed away.

You might want to build your own shed if your garden is big enough, but more compact solutions are available for smaller spaces. These can still hold folding garden furniture and tools, to keep things neat.

Natural vibrancy

A bit of extra vibrancy from the flowers in your garden by choosing plants that flower at different times of the year. Look for perennials, plants that come back year after year, such as lavender, salvias, dianthus and sedums. Draw up a list of your favourites and prepare the ground or pots, so you’re ready to plant up as soon as the weather warms up.
