Mama Life || Kids Off To Uni

*This is a collaborative post

Moving to university is an exciting and fearful time for both child and parent and being prepared is essential to ensure everything goes smoothly. Your child will be responsible for themselves and this in itself poses many challenges. If you want to begin preparing yourself and your child for their move away to university, here are a few ways to do so.

Looking After Themselves

If your child is moving far away for university, or perhaps even studying abroad, they need to know how to look after themselves without the need for constant phone calls. This means preparing them for everything they will need to do once you are no longer there. Teaching your child how to cook a variety of simple, healthy and inexpensive meals is a great way to start.

They should also familiarise themselves with how to wash clothes and clean, which are two of the things that children often take for granted and do not know where to start once mum or dad are not there. This also means they need to have enough money to be able to afford everyday items, so you and your child will need to save some cash up.

Finding A Great Accommodation

The accommodation your child stays at whilst at university can make or break the experience for them. Therefore, it is so important to find a nice, safe accommodation in which they will be able to meet other students and have a great time whilst away.

If your child is looking to study abroad and you want to find student accommodation, somewhere like Valencia for example is a great place to begin your search. Collegiate offers your child the chance to study in another country in beautiful accommodation. You can ensure your child is safe here with their 24-hour security. Your child will feel like they are in a home away from home, with their very own rooftop sun terrace and games room. This is a great place for your child to mingle with other students and make friends with their neighbours.

Supporting Their Decision

Although you can do everything for them, it can still be tough to feel happy about their decision to move away to uni. Even though this could be the best thing for them, as a parent, you cannot help but feel anxious and worried about your child and having them so far away will worsen this.

Come to terms with the fact they are moving away and look at the positives that come with this, as it will help prepare you for their move. You can also visit your child and speak to them with the use of video calling applications, but it is important to give them enough space to enjoy themselves too. Preparing them with what they will need whilst at university will assist in preparing you for their move too.

When your child decides to move to university, there is a lot of preparation to do. Ensure they are financially ready, and that they can look after themselves when they are gone. You will never be fully prepared as a parent for your child leaving home, but having things in place can help ease any stress associated with the move.
