10 Summer Safety Tips // Fireman Sam

Summer safe with Fireman Sam

The 6th of June marks the arrival of Child Safety Week here in the UK, an annual initiative run by the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) to raise awareness of child-related accidents and most importantly - how they can be prevented.

I am a huge worrier and constantly on the look out for hazards and safety issues, a little more than I probably need to but that can't be a bad thing. Our favourite hero next door for the last 29 years - Fireman Sam, has launched a summer safety campaign in support of child safety with CAPT.

The campaign is aimed at teaching children and parents about summer safety, including how to be safe around water while swimming and also when stood near open flames at a barbeque - scary stuff!

Fireman Sam has created a list of top ten summer safety tips to help out us parents and remind our youngsters how to stay safe and have fun to reduce the risk of accidents. Bringing these important tips to life and to support Child Safety Week messages, Fireman Sam and his team also feature in fun animated videos that will ensure all members of the family are aware of the potential hazards that can cause accidents during the summer.

Fireman Sam’s Top Ten Summer Safety Tips

  • Always walk when you are near a swimming pool, never run.
  • Never push anyone into a swimming pool.
  • If you are swimming in the sea, never turn your back to the sea – this will prevent you from seeing big waves coming towards you.
  • Take care when paddling and swimming in the sea as the water can get deep very quickly.
  • Always ensure you have a responsible adult with you when paddling and swimming in the sea.
  • Always leave lighting a barbeque to a responsible adult.
  • Ensure you keep your barbeque a safe distance from trees, bushes and anything else that may catch fire before lighting it.
  • Make sure that your barbeque is placed on a flat surface so it stays in place once it’s lit.
  • Always stand back from a barbeque and keep a safe distance whilst it is in use.
  • Stand back from the edge of the platform at the railway station and never push anyone whilst on the platform.

Katrina Phillips, Chief Executive of the Child Accident Prevention Trust, comments: “It is really important that parents and children are vigilant and take extra precaution this summer to avoid unnecessary accidents. The Fireman Sam Summer Safety videos are a fantastic way to support Child Safety Week and what we stand for, as well as reinforcing key safety messages without finger wagging at parents”.
