Blog School >> What Should I blog About?

What should I blog about?

This is a really common question for new bloggers. You may know that you want a blog of your own, you may even know what your end goal is be it money, fame, work experience, but can't quite focus on exactly what to blog about or work out your 'niche' blog subject.

Firstly, I firmly don't believe you need a niche to have a successful blog. In actual fact, I think having no niche is a far more interesting 'niche' of its own and gives you infinitive choices for blog fodder; It doesn't restrict your ideas or post subjects, it opens your blog up to a far wider audience and means that whatever your mood or thoughts that day, you can write about without worrying about relevance.

The only problem with a no niche blog is that there a billions of blogs out there, so it is far harder to stand out as a general blogger than for instance a more specific fitness blog for example.

The basic theme is really up to you and it is really important to think about the following;

  • Does the subject you are leaning towards have longevity?
  • Will you be able to grow your blog with this subject?
  • Will you have enough to write about?
  • Is you subject a fashion that could pass or a hobby that could grow old?
  • Does it restrict you in any way?
  • Will it interest you and/or your readers?

My blog started as a pretty traditional 'Mummy Blog'. I am happy to still be given that title as I do feature heavily on the family stuff and a fair bit of my posts are kid related and children's product reviews.

I did however open my blog up, when I discovered that instead of writing a million and one things about baby, I did actually rediscover a love of me time, interests in fashion, design, home decor etc and felt this space was no longer about just the kids, but my life and world in a nutshell. It is me.

I don't have a particular niche I guess, but I do have a few key areas that I focus on that will be able to grow with me as the kids get bigger and our lives go on new adventures.

When thinking about your blog subject just think about yourself, what you love, what you are passionate about, what makes you happy scrolling through Pinterest for hours on end or what you have to say that will interest others or make you feel better for writing it. Blogging is great therapy and if you need a little of that then grab it with both hands.

You may have a particular skill set or area of expertise you can offer ongoing advice about, or be an amazing cook that wants to sample foods on the world. You are not restricted to one idea, your blog can be and be about anything you want it to be!

Whatever you choose to blog about, make it something that is all for you, things that will keep you in love with your blog. Never focus purely on the end goal, it takes a lot of work to get to the top and make money. Some lucky bloggers do find success for their aims very quickly but more often than not, you will need to put a lot into your blog to get to where you want to go, so you really need to make sure you enjoy it in the process! A lot of bloggers come and go because they can't face the hard work involved to get where they want to be. It is hard work, and if you don't love it then it may not be for you.

For your first post whatever your subject, I would introduce yourself, tell everyone about your blog and go from there.
